Bowness Pier
No stay in the Lake District is complete without a trip across Lake Windermere on one of the three steam-powered vessels (MV Swan, Teal and Tern). Both Ambleside and Lakeside are a stone’s throw away with fantastic walking routes, eateries, and museums. Be sure to visit the Lakeside-Haverthwaite Railway!
The World Of Beatrix Potter
An enchanting Lake District attraction where Beatrix Potter’s magical tales of Peter Rabbit and his many friends are brought to life. Take a little Potter magic home with you from their beautiful gift shop, but not before you step outside to admire Peter Rabbit’s Garden.
The attraction also houses the Old Laundry Theatre where you can enjoy the many riveting plays, comedies and classical music exhibitions on offer.
Holker Hall
Holker Hall is the finest house in South Lakeland. The architectural interest of the house is almost all Victorian, a replacement after a fire in 1871. You can tour the house without the restriction of ropes and admire the library, drawing room, and ornate dining room. Upstairs certainly doesn’t disappoint with its portraits of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza. You can also visit the bedroom where Queen Mary stayed in 1937.
Sizergh Castle
This imposing house stands proud at the gateway to the Lake District. Its rich and beautiful garden includes a pond, lake, a national collection of hardy ferns and a superb limestone rock garden. Still occupied by the Strickland family, Sizergh has many tales to tell and certainly feels lived in with centuries-old portraits and fine furniture sitting alongside modern family photographs.
Brockhole National Park Visitor Centre
Brockhole, situated between Ambleside and Windermere, is the Lake District National Park Visitor Centre. It is set in 30 acres of magnificent terraced gardens and grounds stretching down to the shore of Lake Windermere with splendid views of the surrounding countryside.
The centre offers numerous activities, including the famous ‘Tree Top Trek’, Boat Hire, Laser Clay Shooting and Archery.
Lakeside - Haverthwaite Railway
As soon as you disembark from your lake cruise at Lakeside Pier you will have the opportunity to step aboard steam and diesel locomotives that the Railway exhibits, taking a short journey, via Newby Bridge, to Haverthwaite Railway Station.
The tea rooms, gift shop and historic locomotive sheds all add to the experience.
Royalty Cinema
Built in 1926 and a mere 30 paces from the Cottage, the Royalty Cinema offers an authentic 20th Century motion picture experience with its Art Deco interior.
The cinema regularly exhibits period films and the magnificent Wurlitzer Organ is a wonderful accompaniment to these events.
